I have already talked about the Star Wars Roleplaying Game from Fantasy Flight Games in a post that went out a few weeks ago. I've only played a few sessions of that but it is certainly top of my list to play again. However, there are some other games in the mix...
Star Wars: Imperial Assault
Star Wars: Imperial Assault came out quite a while ago from the team at Fantasy Flight Games but it's still a solid choice for someone wanting to play Star Wars on the tabletop. When it first launched, the main theme of the game was to have one player take on the role of the Empire whilst the others at the table took played as the valiant heroes. This is what kept it off my radar for so long.
I like one-versus-many games when they don't feel like they're having to meet half-way in their design. For that reason, DOOM (which I reviewed HERE) is a great game. Almost every review of the game has pointed out that one side or the other will feel short-changed from mission to mission as you try and meet that balancing act.
So why am I talking about it? Well, Fantasy Flight Games released a companion app for the game which turned it into an entirely cooperative experience and that has made it well-worth diving into if you're given the chance. Much like with the app for Descent, it opens up the game, makes it much more pleasant to play and offers you a nice degree of replay value.
A lot of the problems with Descent were solved in Imperial Assault which makes it a very good prospect for those wanting to play some Star Wars "dungeon delving". If you're looking for an RPG-esque experience on the tabletop then this might be for you.
My friend has a copy of Imperial Assault and it is a real shame he lives just that little bit too far away. I would love to dive in and play through some scenarios with him and a few friends.
Star Wars: Destiny
Next up, we have Star Wars: Destiny. This is another game which came out of Fantasy Flight Games and whilst they have recently announced that they are going to cease producing the game, it is still a very entertaining game to break out on the tabletop.Star Wars: Destiny is very quick and easy to play. You choose the heroes or villains you want to play as, collect their dice, and then roll away to see who can take down the other team the quickest. There is a really nice mix of different characters in the mix, each with their own unique skills. You can make some canon teams or just go with something which is a bit more "what if?".
The game does have its pitfalls. The random element to collecting the game can make it quite the pain but once you've got your hands on a nice set of named characters and a few extra cards, you can normally play some pretty awesome decks which are full of fun quirks.
I bought into the first few expansions for Star Wars: Destiny and whilst it does seem like a lot of money now, I am certainly going to hold onto my collection for the future. I could see this being a game I teach others to play down the line when they want something quick and fun to play within the Star Wars universe.
X-Wing
Finally, a game that I just wasn't on board with when it first released. I was going through a period where X-Wing just didn't appeal and I also didn't want to play anything which felt too competitive. Every time I saw X-Wing it looked like a game that I would suck at and therefore not have any fun.A few years ago, I put that aside. I just decided that I'd like to play the game and get over my hang-ups about it. I had a lot of fun. I lost, of course, but it was still a very fun game and I could see myself playing a bit more of it.
The wealth of content for the game is pretty much monolithic right now. You can't move for expansions, big ships, small ships, re-prints, card packs and scenarios. This can make it seem like it could be a little daunting but you can genuinely have a good time with it after cracking open the starter set and maybe a few more models.
I could see myself playing X-Wing in the same style as I would play Destiny. It would be nice to have a few pre-made decks and lists for the game which you could crack out of an afternoon and play a few games with. You could then play as the Rebels one time, then switch and play as the Empire to see if you do any better!
Much like with Imperial Assault, the game somewhat fell by the wayside for me and I could see myself nudging a few friends to see if they'd be up for playing a game or two in the near future.
