Demi Lovato's "Cool For the Summer" - Single Review

Former Disney starlet Demi Lovato continues to break the teen mold and grows more confident in her pop persona with every album release. Following her therapeutic Unbroken and self-titled Demi, which both featured her biggest hits to date, "Give Your Heart A Break" and "Heart Attack", the artist is moving forward with plans for her fifth studio album, out later this year on Hollywood Records.

The upcoming project's lead single, "Cool For the Summer", is another change in sound and style for the young singer as it takes her down an electro-rock influenced road while she sings of dipping her feet slightly into the lady pool this summer. As an outspoken crusader for LGBT rights, the provocative lyrics are not a surprising next step for Lovato, she seems to have let loose, having fun in the process.

For some of the highlights of the new track, Lovato's commanding vocals will draw the most praise from critics. Not since the heartbreaking "Skyscraper" has the artist sounded more at ease with her surroundings. Hearing her glide across deliciously sultry songwriting definitely helps. "Got my mind on your body, and your body on my mind, got a taste for the cherry, I just need to take a bite," she seductively pleads on the song's hook, easily the shining moment.

"Cool For the Summer" will undoubtedly divide fans. Experiencing Lovato's ever-improving vocal abilities paired with a sickening and infectious rock-leaning backing beat is exciting and unexpected. However, the finished product does not necessarily scream radio airplay and could face some trouble fitting in with the current leaders of the charts. Unless, it rewrites radio altogether for 2015. Wouldn't that be amazing?

Lovato is an artist people like to keep their eyes on. From her emotional ballads to her catchy dance floor-ready bangers, she's already shown she can do it all. "Cool For the Summer" is another reinvention, something more edgy, that will keep her audience intrigued and already has this blogger hooked after a few listens. The song scores many points for originality and thinking outside the pop box, but falls short of all desired expectations.

The artist is definitely not holding back this summer, she's ready for some trouble to come her way... just don't tell your mother!
